Avoiding Content Theft via Feedburner

Many podcasters have either heard about or heard from a site called, which has emailed a large number of podcasters offering free web hosting for podcasts. Unfortunately the company behind, Emerge Media(as found by my friend Jen and written about on went one step further, which was a step over the line into the unacceptable.

It was discovered this weekend that had scraped many podcast feeds, stripped out any tracking being done via sites like podtrac and blubrry, and then linked directly to the source MP3 files on ad heavy pages. This is being done without permission, and without even requesting authorization. Worse then a common podcast directory, this company is taking people’s work, taking out the chances of making money, and then making money themselves off that work without paying the podcaster at all. It’s the worst kind of digital theft, because they point people at the files hosted by the creator, but without permission or the tracking many shows use for advertising.

One thing was pointed out to me about last night, and further investigation showed that one thing I suspected helped turned out to be the linch pin. Dawnforge, you see, has always used Feedburner, and via settings that we have long used, the URL of our show files are obfuscated, so that the actual URL of the source file is not visible by scraping our feed. They can’t take off the tracking and point to the source because they can’t see it.

Now, due to the many requests I got via Twitter, I am going to tell you how to do this for yourself to avoid being a victim of these bastards ever again. First, some preparations, though.

What you should do is shift the location of your source files so that they cannot link to the old episodes, or I should say, if they do link to them, they won’t find anything. People using their site will get awfully pissed off if all the shows they try to access aren’t loading. You should do the same thing for your RSS feed, as feedburner will need to source that raw feed in order to provide a more secure feed with masked URLs. Once those are changed, you should head over to which is the URL for the feedburner service since Google bought them.

Once you are logged into a Google account, you will be given a chance to make a new feed, and there will be a check box that says ‘I’m a Podcaster’ as seen in the image below. If you already have feedburner set up, this box will be at the bottom of your feed list.

Once you have entered the RSS URL and hit next, you’ll be presented with the chance to customize the path of your feed. If you have full DNS control of your site, you can set up a url to point to the feedburner location, which can help maintain feed control in case Google ever turns evil. That, though, is for another time.

As you declared yourself a podcaster, the next step is to setup your itunes feed info, which should pretty closely match what’s in your iTunes info now, but sadly it does not get imported. I do want to make a note here to advise that you should leave an nearly empty RSS file in the place of the old one, using the RSS redirect protocol described here.   Once you have the iTunes details entered, hit next and you’ll be taken to the stats setup page.

I should note here, that while I recommend checking all three available boxes, the key one won’t actually stick so we’ll need to go in set it a second time in our next step. Enter your settings as seen below and then hit next.

When you have completed set up, you’ll be taken to your feed page. If you look at the feed link now, that RSS icon under the feed name, you’ll see the same old links. If you go to Configure Stats in that side bar, you’ll see the page below, which you’ll note the ‘Item enclosure downloads’ option is not checked, even though we checked it before. Hit that checkbox and hit save, then open or refresh the actual feed page and…

BAM! You have masked download links via This should, at the least, prevent them from using your files without tracking, and if they respond to yours like they did mine, they will just drop your page as they can’t profit off your work anymore. I can’t guarantee that they will stop serving up your show, but it will mean they can’t strip out tracking you do, and they will be significantly less inclined, I promise.

I hope this helps some of you out there who are feeling hard hit by these people at

New Show Added to Dawnforge

We here at Dawnforge are proud to welcome a new show to the line up of podcasts on the network. The Chaos Portal Podcast, a new venture from Legracen, Zaducia, and Kat which is in it’s second official episode will be joining the Dawnforge Network. We welcome them to the family, and hope to work with them to make the network better by their company.

Thank you, and Congratulations

Today, the space community has achieved something incredible with the cooperation of scientists and engineers from around the world. Mars Curiosity, the most technologically advanced rover ever made, has landed on Mars tonight with great success. The rover soon will begin it’s job of exploring the surface of the red planet.

More officially known as the Mars Science Laboratory, it left earth in November, and landed today, joining it’s cousins Mars Pathfinder/Sojourner, Spirit and Opportunity, who captured the admiration of people around the world when they not only landed in January, 2004, but came to be a symbol for the ingenuity, dedication, and perseverance of the human spirit when the rovers far out lived their planned lives on Mars, and to this day Opportunity still does the work we have asked of it. It was planned to live for 92 and a half days. It has now lived over 3000 days on the Martian surface.

If Mars Curiosity has anywhere near the success that Opportunity and Spirit, I am confident that we will learn a lot about the planet, about the universe, and the human willingness to seek out the stars. Much like when I was following Spirit and Opportunity in 2004 and as amazing photos came from the planet, tonight I am reminded of a quote that comes to mind every time there is talk about space exploration, and whether we need to look beyond out own orbit. It is a quote from Babylon 5, by actor Michael O’Hare playing character Jeffrey Sinclair:

“Ask ten different scientists about the environment, population control, genetics and you’ll get ten different answers, but there’s one thing every scientist on the planet agrees on. Whether it happens in a hundred years or a thousand years or a million years, eventually our Sun will grow cold and go out. When that happens, it won’t just take us. It’ll take Marilyn Monroe and Lao-Tzu, Einstein, Morobuto, Buddy Holly, Aristophanes .. and all of this .. all of this was for nothing unless we go to the stars.”

Thank you to all the folks at NASA, all the folks worldwide who worked on the many parts and systems of the Marsd Curiosity rover, and those who have long supported the idea of space exploration. You have made this step forward in human progress possible, and a reality. The one thing that is always amazing to see is how humanity can overcome obstacles to do the most incredible things. With so many setbacks for the space program, the entire Shuttle fleet being decommissioned, major budget cuts at NASA and throughout the space program, and more, the folks who work in the space industry have achieved a momentous thing. Thank you, NASA, for driving, helping, feeding, and fueling human Curiosity.

Curiosity Rover @MarsCuriosity: I’m safely on the surface of Mars. GALE CRATER I AM IN YOU!!! #MSL

Dawnforge Remembers

Today, the 11th of November, it is marked as Remembrance Day in Canada, where Dawnforge is located, and in all countries of the Commonwealth. In the U.S.A, where many of our staff and show hosts reside, it is Veteran’s Day. In New Zealand, France and Belgium it is Armistice Day, and in Poland it is Independence Day. On this day we remember who have fought, served, and in some cases died for their country, for freedom, for our safety.

In my time running All Things Azeroth, Dawnforge, and playing WoW, I have met many who have served their country, be it Canada, the USA, or other allies. On this day I remember them, their sacrifices, their resolve, and their actions. I remember the fear I felt for friends when I knew they were going into active battle zones, and how happy I was to know I had friends who served to defend freedom.

Both my Grandfather and Brother have served in the Canadian military. I am thankful neither served in war time, that neither had to fire their weapons in anger, and that I did not lose them to war. My brother served for a couple years as a Reservist in the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders, and he spent a couple of summers serving and being trained at several bases across Canada. I am sure his time there impacted him, and helped make him the person he is today. I wonder, at time, where I would be, what my life would be like, if I had followed in his footsteps.

My grandfather joined the military in 1949, and retired in 1971 from the Third Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. My father, his siblings, and my grandparents traveled around the country, from posting to posting, as my grandfather served his duty to the forces. When he passed away in early 2009, his local Royal Canadian Legion, as well as a few who served with him when he was in the military were there to pay their respects to a comrade who thankfully passed many years after his service ended.

So it is today, on the 11th of November, when so many in the world remember those who have been lost, who have passed before in service of their country, of freedom, of liberty, I ask that we remember all who have served, who have given their time and their efforts, and yes some even their lives, for the freedoms we enjoy today. It is in this that I play the following video be Canadian artist Roland Majeau, who also has US and UK versions of the song on his site, and ask that you thank those who have served, and fought, and lost in the name of Freedom. We will always honor, remember… and never forget.

Soldiers Cry (by Roland Majeau)

Talk of trouble is sent through the country
And we need an army
To fight for the right
Young men enlist and are sent to the battle
To fight the offender and help our allies

And the young men cry Oh Canada
Well gladly go and fight for thee
And the young men cry Oh Canada
Well fight to keep you free

The battles raging
Gun fire is blazing
A tired young soldier is clinging to life
Hes ordered off
And obeys by advancing
No hope of returning from the enemy fire

And the soldier cries Oh Canada
If it must be so, Ill die for thee
And the soldier cries Oh Canada
Ill die to keep you free

And we all miss oh Canada
The land where we all used to be
And we all long for Canada
The true north
strong and free

And the soldier cries Oh Canada
If it must be so, Ill die for thee
And the soldier cries Oh Canada
Ill die to keep you free

Far away we had seen a great danger
And yet theres a danger much greater within
The noise we make as we constantly bicker
Would hush not a whisper if we listen to him

All the thousands cry Oh Canada
Is that why we have died for thee?
And the soldiers cry Oh Canada
We died to keep you free

And the soldier cries oh Canada
Be true
And strong
For me

Please share your thoughts in the comments on this day, who you remember, and your wishes for those who still fight each day for Freedom.
